One of the most severe challenges trees and shrubs face in the urban environment is compaction. Compaction leads to reduced pore space for water and air. Water intake is reduced and movement to lower layers is restricted. These factors limit root growth and can cause root girdling as well as reduce biological diversity of the soil. The soil profile of urban environments is declining and in turn this affects the health of our trees and shrubs. Fertile soil is absent, plant roots are restriced, water movement is suppressed and nutrients cannot be exchanged and absorbed. Healthy and fertile soils enable trees to live longer, grow bigger, cast more shade, and absorb more CO2 and water runoff. Trees provide uncountable benefits for all. Investing in your soil will preserve and maximize your investment for the long term.

Urban Soil Conditions vs Fertile Soil Conditions

All plants require a fertile soil so they can survive and grow properly. The picture to the right describes a natural forest like setting and how trees and their roots interact with the different soil horizons. In urban environments

the top layers or horizons are removed during the development and building phases of construction. These layers contain the valuable organic elements that make up a fertile soil and are often replaced for soil conditions that favour development, such as clay based and compacted soils. These modified urban soil conditions have an elevated pH, restricted access to water and poor drainage and an altered biological community. All of these conditions inhibit a trees growth, longevity and survival. Weakened trees cannot tolerate environmental stressors and are more susceptible to insect infestations and diseases. We use soil solutions that replenish, rejuvenate and amend soils to a more natural state. Our services can resolve poor urban soil conditions. We strive to provide your soil with the requirements to grow healthy trees.

Organic Mushroom Compost/Bio Char/Mulch Soil Mix

Super Soil Mix Components

Super Soil Mix Components

We have refined our soil mixture to mimic the abilities of the world renown super soil Terra Petra of the Amazon. We have combined locally sourced by-products of nature to produce a super soil mulch that work together to deliver the total package of benefits for your gardens, trees & shrubs. A healthy and rich soil is the most basic requirement for plants to thrive. If your soil is depleted or barren of nutrients, moisture and biological activity your plants will suffer or struggle to survive. Give your plants, trees and shrubs a healthy home to thrive in. Different quantities and options are available.

Soil Amendment & Rejuvenation

The most basic need of trees and shrubs is a healthy soil. If your tree looks unhealthy the evidence could be in the soil. We can assess the state of your soil and suggest solutions to amend and rejuvenate it for success.

For more severe urban soil challenges, we can provide a thorough examination and help solve your problem. We will assess your soil profile with a soil test (defining levels of pH, macro & micro nutrients, minerals and organic content, water drainage and compaction). A holistic environmentally friendly approach will then be used to find solutions with a goal to return your soil to a more natural state suitable to host your trees and shrubs.

We can help remediate and amend poor soil conditions using mulch/biochar blends, radial trenching, air spade excavation, and aeration tubes. We strive to improve your soil profile with long lasting effective solutions where your plants and trees can thrive.

Soil Test Assessment

Soil test is conducted defining levels of pH, macro & micro nutrients, minerals and organic content, water drainage and compaction.

Once assessed, we will strive to reduce and remove negative soil qualities and allow increased movement and access to water, nutrients, pore and root space.

Soil Strategies for Success

  • Using latest technologies such as Air Spade Excavation

  • Reduce compaction with radial trenching techniques

  • Increase the access to oxygen and water with aeration tubes

  • Soil remediation with mulch, compost, biochar soil blends
